Notes Will deliver soil to you by the cubic yard. Submitted by Gail Murphy For soil, call Cal Blend Soils in Irwindale. Order their Leaf Post for $20 a cubic yard, its the best quality, affordable compost in the area. Don’t buy their Veggie Garden blend. Its basically a bit of compost mixed with beach sand and is quite terrible. Also don’t bring in soil to fill your raised beds. Your soil is fine, just needs some organic matter and beneficial microbes. The instructor reported she and others have not had any issues with the quality of the Cal Blend Soils. I’ve known others to use their soil too. Notes If you are not familiar with Lee Valley, you should be. They have high quality gardening stuff for EVERY aspect of gardening, at reasonable, reasonable price. It’s extensive–they even have gardening stuff you never knew about (like a heated garden hose for northern climes!). They also have stuff for processing seeds, for canning, etc. and books. Anyhow, their new Full Catalogue is out and I recommend that you get a copy. You can order it hardcopy, of view it online. Lee Valley is a woodworker’s and gardener’s paradise catalogues–and they have a separate third catalogue of hardware for drawer knobs, hinges, pulls and the like. Notes I’ve not tried the emergency clinic in Pasadena, but have been to the one in Eagle Rock numerous times when (inevitably) my critters have gotten sick after hours (evenings/weekends/holidays). Have had nothing but positive experiences with them. It’s an ER, so runs just like a human one in terms of worst cases seen first etc etc. Submitted by P Goeders 11/27/10

Notes Cotton produce bags available, made from recycled t-shirts. The Arroyo Time Bank would send volunteers to pick the tree, juice the fruit, and sell it as a fund raiser. I can help make the arrangement. Submitted by Gloria Putnam 11/8/10 I also want mention that Arroyo Time Bank operates a Neighborhood Fruit Harvest Project aimed at reducing food waste in the area by harvesting excess backyard (or front yard!) fruit and redistributing it within the community. There are so many trees dripping with fruit that goes unused (particularly citrus, of course) in our area and our fruit harvest project could always use more help organizing, reaching out to the community, and harvesting the fruit if anyone is interested you can email us at atbfruitharvest@gmail.com Submitted by Kristin Petherbridge 1/6/13

Notes I have had great success with http://www.klausesbees.com/ Klaus came to our house and re-housed a hive that had been under our garden shed for about 2 1/2 years. He didn’t kill the bees, but offered them the man-made hives to move into, and when the queen moved in, he had a new hive to take on his rounds. It takes some time– about two weeks or so– but it is humane and valuable, since bees have been dying out from apparently a viral-fungal combination infection. Bees are essential to our food system and should be preserved as carefully as any heirloom breed of vegetable! Klaus is a gruff guy better suited to communing with bees than socializing with people, but he really cares about the critters and will put them to work in honey production so they are happy and busy. Notes I use ACal Pest control. It was started about 15 years ago by Luis, a young man who was concerned that the mega pest control company he was working for was ripping people off on termite control. So he went to school and got all the certifications and started a family-owned business. (He has since been killed when hit by a car.) I have used his company for 15 years and have been very pleased. They are kind, honest, diligent and helpful folk. They spray with botanicals not toxins and will set traps for rats/mice and will come anytime to empty the trap one is caught. (Yes, I am a wuss and a sissie). They have used glue and snap traps at my house but I believe that they will use catch-and-release traps if you wish. I hired them recently to trim my trees and they did a wonderful job, and yes they left my yard and patio all swept up and clean. Submitted bu Karen Kitchel, 2/5/13 We recently used Leo and his team to trim a couple of large oaks, an enormous pine, and to remove a couple of ashes. The guys were terrific. Polite, attentive, clean. They mulched everything at the end, leaving us with a school-bus-sized mulch pile and a smaller bill then other companies had quoted us. Okay, I’ll admit it. They were also very patient with the herbalist living here who insisted on going through the oak trimmings to collect really good galls and had them hunting for places where pine resin had collected up high in the tree. We actually had a little bit of a problem, but he was good at working it through and in the end it was fine.
